The Samsung Q6F QLED is a 4k TV with great performance for a wide range of different usages. It has very good picture quality due to the high native contrast ratio so blacks appear deep in a dark room, but the local dimming doesn't work well to improve dark scene performance further. It can get bright to overcome glare in a bright room, and also has good reflection handling. Gamers will be pleased by the excellent low input lag and support for variable refresh rates, and the TV can also interpolate low frame rate content with low input lag for a smooth gaming experience. Unfortunately, the image loses accuracy when viewed at an angle.

Note that this is a different TV to the 2017 QLED Q6F. The 2018 Q6FN is also called Q6F or Q6.

Samsung Q6FN Design Picture

The design of the Samsung Q6FN is very good. Some of its features like the stand, the back, and the cable management system resemble the higher-end Q8FN. Just like the Q8FN, the Q6FN does not come with the external One Connect box, so you do not have to plan for it if you decide to wall mount it. The TV is thin with nice borders and operates at a reasonably cool temperature. The build quality is okay but lacks those finishings that premium models have.

The Q6FN runs fairly cool and at pretty steady temperature. The warmest area is where the LEDs are hosted, on the lower end of the screen.

The build quality of the Q6 is okay. It does not have any gaps and feels solid. It lacks the premium feeling that the Q8FN has.

Picture Quality

The Samsung Q6F has great picture quality. With a high contrast ratio, the TV produces deep black scenes and will perform well both in a dark room and in a bright room, although there are some issues with reflections. Both SDR and HDR content looks good and the peak brightness will keep most people happy.  Gray uniformity is good and although some dirty screen effect is visible when viewing sports, this should not be an issue for most. The narrow viewing angles are typical for a VA panel and as such the TV is not well suited for wide viewing environments.

The contrast of the Samsung Q6F 55 is excellent. Just like most Samsung TVs, the contrast level is high. Even with local dimming disabled the contrast is excellent and blacks appear black in a dark room.

Note: This TV does not allow the switching off of Local Dimming from the regular menu. To take our measurements of native contrast and black uniformity we had to deactivate it through the service menu.

Gray uniformity is decent. At 50% gray, some clouding is visible and the center of the screen is slightly brighter. Dirty screen effect is noticeable when watching sports or playing video games. The Samsung Q6F has a poor viewing angle, typical for a VA panel. When looking at an angle one notices blacks turning gray and colors shifting, even at small angles. These results are in line with results from other QLEDs. This TV is not a good option if the intended usage involves wide room seating.

Black uniformity is outstanding on the Q6F, surpassing the already good performance of the Q8FN. There is almost no clouding even close to the test cross.

With LD activated the results are slightly worse as we can see some clouding around the test cross area, but in general, they are still very good.

The pre-calibration out of the box settings are pretty good for the Q6. Best results are with the picture mode set to Movie.

At low input levels, the image appears slightly dark as white is missing luminosity. Colors, however, are quite accurate, and just a little warmer due to the 6318K color temperature. The gamma is off at 2.45.

Here are the white balance and gamma pictures measured with 100% windows. These perform better, as the local dimming cannot be disabled and affects the calibration results of smaller window sizes.

Samsung Q6FN EOTF

The Q6F has a wide color gamut as it covers more than 90% of the DCI P3 color space and just above 67% of the Rec.2020 color space.

It is not as wide as the Q7FN or the Q8FN and it also suffers when it comes to the representation of cyan, green and yellow.

It tracks the EOTF line well almost up to about 700 nits or 65% of the input signal, after which some compression is taking place. This will not be bothersome to most people.

The PC and Game mode EOTFs do not follow our input stimulus as well. This effectively makes shadows in dark scenes look slightly darker, but it shouldn't be an issue for most people.

The Samsung "Q6" has great motion handling, very similar to the other 2018 Samsung QLEDs. The response time is very good and fast moving objects have very little motion blur. The backlight flickers at all brightness levels, and the flicker changes depending on the motion interpolation options enabled. The 2018 Q6 supports a variable refresh rate, which works best with 1080p content since the 4k range of 48-60 fps won't work with graphics intensive games that target 30 fps.

The Samsung Q6F supports FreeSync from our Xbox One S and Radeon RX 580 GPU, at 4k, 1440p and 1080p resolutions. At 1080p its range is wide enough to support Low Frequency Compensation, thus extending its lower limit below 20 Hz; unfortunately its 4k range is a much smaller 60-48 Hz, but good enough for Xbox One games that target 60 fps.

On the TV, Freesync is enabled by turning on Game Mode and setting FreeSync to On. Game mode must be on for VRR to work. Even when set to 'Auto', the TV will stay in game mode as long as Freesync is enabled. The auto function will not turn off game mode when watching a movie on an Xbox One for example.

Update 06/05/2018: The 49" model has a 60 Hz panel, so the VRR mode for 1080p content is limited to 60 fps.

The Samsung Q6F has excellent low input lag when in PC or Game mode. The Q6 supports a variable refresh rate, and the 1080p input lag is extremely low with VRR enabled, which is great for Xbox One gaming.

Like the other 2018 Samsung TVs, the Q6FN can interpolate lower frame rate games up to 60 or 120 Hz. When interpolating up to 60Hz (Judder Reduction -> 10, Blue Reduction -> 0), there is 21.3 ms of input lag. When interpolating up to 120 Hz (Judder Reduction -> 10, Blur Reduction -> 10), there is 27.6 ms of input. Both of these are still low enough for most gamers and can be enabled to help motion appear smoother.

When the input label is set to 'PC' and Game mode is enabled, Game Motion Plus becomes available and the Q6FN supports a variable refresh rate when connected to a compatible PC.

The Samsung Q6FN supports most of the common resolutions without issue. Strangely, it supports 1440p @ 120 Hz without issue as long as Chroma 4:4:4 is not used, but 1440p @ 60 Hz is not supported.

4k @ 60 Hz with Chroma 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 require HDMI UHD Color enabled for the port used. For all resolutions Chroma 4:4:4 requires the input label to be set to PC

The frequency response is about average. LFE (low-frequency extension) is at 76Hz, which is decent. It means that this TV will produce a decent amount of punch, but no thump or rumble. The response above the LFE point is also decent, but may lack a little bit of clarity and presence for dialogs. Additionally, this TV doesn't get very loud, and doesn't have a room correction system either. That's why it wasn't able to remove the modes of our test room around 200Hz.

The remote is the same as the one included in all high-end Samsung TVs, including the other QLEDs and the NU8000. There are very few buttons, most of them open other menus on the TV.

The Samsung SmartThings app is quite basic, but has been updated with some more advanced features including the ability to cast content from the TV to your phone. The app can work as a replacement remote. It is also used to control the new QLED Ambient Mode.

The remote app can also be used to send voice commands to the TV, but only in the main interface. If an app that doesn't support voice commands is open, the remote function and voice commands don't work.

Differences between Sizes and Variants

We tested the 55" (QN55Q6FN) version FA01. For the most part, we expect our review to be valid for the 65" version (QN65Q6FN), 75" version (QN75Q6FN) and 82" version (QN82Q6FN). Note that larger TVs are typically more prone to uniformity issues.

The 49" model (QN49Q6FN) is not yet available but likely has a 60 Hz panel as documented by the Samsung Support Page, as such some results may be slightly different including the motion interpolation and the VRR range. For the most part, we still expect our review to be valid.

The warehouse variant of the 2018 Q6F is known as the Q65FN. The stand is black instead of chrome, and depending on the specific warehouse model it might have a simpler remote. We don't expect any other differences and our review should still be valid.

If someone comes across a different type of panel or if their Samsung Q6FN doesn't correspond to our review, let us know and we will update the review.

Samsung Q8FN

The Samsung Q8FN is a better TV than the Samsung Q6FN. The Q8FN has better dark room performance than the Q6FN thanks to the much better full array local dimming feature. HDR looks even better on the 2018 Q8F thanks to the wider color gamut and better color volume. The Q8FN is brighter than the Q6FN in SDR and HDR.

Samsung NU8000
49" 55" 65" 75" 82"

The Samsung Q6FN is a slightly better TV than the Samsung NU8000, but for most people these differences aren't worth spending more for. The Q6FN has better native contrast, is a bit brighter, has a wider color gamut as well as having slightly lower input lag. The differences in each of these is very minor, and most people won't notice much of a difference between the two.

TCL R617
55" 65"

The Samsung Q6FN is slightly better than the TCL R617, but the differences are minor and not worth it for most people. The R617 has some uniformity issues that aren't present in the Q6FN, so for sports or TV shows during the day the Q6FN is a better choice. The Samsung Q6FN also has a wider color gamut and better color volume, so if you want the absolute best HDR colors get the Samsung. Overall, the R617 is better for most people as it is brighter, has a better local dimming feature, and has nearly identical input lag.

Sony X900F

The Sony X900F is better than the Samsung Q6FN. The X900F has better picture quality thanks to the full array local dimming, higher peak brightness, and better viewing angles. How would you compare this to the Q7F? Are they basically the same thing, with the Q7 having a One Connect box?

Not quite. The Q7FN has the One Connect box, but it is also brighter, and has a better reflective coating, so it performs better in a bright room. The Q7FN is also able to produce a wider array of colors and has better color volume.

The 2018 49" Q6FN has a 120hz panel, not released in the US yet. This TV vs the Sony X900F for Xbox One X gaming, which unit do you recommend?
The 49" Q6FN actually has a 60 Hz panel, not a 120 Hz panel like the other Q6 models. Between the Q6FN and X900F, the X900F is better. While the Q6FN has better(lower) input lag, the X900F has better motion handling and better overall picture quality.

Is the peak brightness and wider color gamut much more noticeable in the Q7FN compared to the Q6FN, especially in HD 4K? Is it worth the price increase? Although I could get the 75” NU8000 for the same price and it seems that’s close to the Q6FN.
The Q7FN's higher peak brightness will be especially noticeable in a bright room. It also has a much better reflective coating and will be better able to overcome glare. If you watch a lot of TV during the day in a bright room, the Q7FN is worth the price difference. The wider color gamut will be noticeable if you are comparing the two TVs side by side, but otherwise most people probably won't notice it. The Q7FN also has the One Connect box, which could be considered an advantage for some people.

Between the 55S617/615 and the 49" Q6F, which is the better TV to get strictly for HDR gaming with and Xbox One X and PC? I am very picky and own a Sony 65XBR930E for my main TV but I am looking to move my gaming over to a desktop setup and unsure of which TV to buy. Any help would be awesome!
Do you mean the TCL S517 or TCL R617? We have not heard of the S617.

If you mean the S517, the Q6FN would be a better choice as it performs better in HDR Gaming as it has lower input lag when displaying 4k@60Hz+HDR as well as lower response time and much better BFI (Which helps clearing motion).

If you mean the R617, the differences with the Q6FN do not favor one or the other. The Q6FN has VRR (FreeSync) which reduces input lag and eliminates screen tearing and has lower input lag when displaying 4k@60Hz+HDR, but the R617 has better local dimming and supports Dolby Vision. We recommend you go with the R617 as the price difference is considerable and most people will not notice major differences between the two models. The TCL R617 is currently our Mid-range 4k HDR Gaming TV recommendation.

Hi I'm trying to decide between the 82" Samsung Q6FN ($3,799) or 85" Sony X850F. The sony is $200 more. Which one is the better tv?
The Q6FN has better blacks, contrast and lower input lags if you are a gamer. The X850F has a better viewing angle, so may be a better choice for those with wide seating. You should also take a look at the Samsung NU8000 as it offers better value for similar performance as the Q6FN.

The Samsung Q6FN has outstanding black uniformity, performing slightly better than the NU8000. When used in a dark room with high backlight settings, blooming will be visible on both the NU8000 and the Q6FN. In terms of black uniformity, these two models perform equally great and the difference between them will mostly be due to panel variance.

Your link to the 49" 2018 QLED from B&H photo shows it as a 120HZ, this same TV in the UK also has a 120HZ panel. It is supposed to be released in the US by end of June.
Thanks for the information, we're not really sure yet what the 49" Q6FN is, but the Samsung Support Page (click on 'See More Specs') lists the 49" model as having a 120 Motion Rate, which corresponds to a 60 Hz panel. The Q6FN is a better TV than the NU8000 in all usages. The Samsung Q6FN has higher HDR and SDR peak brightness and has better contrast than the NU8000. There is not a big difference between the Q6FN and the NU8000, but it might be better to pay the price difference and go with the Q6FN since you plan on keeping it for a long time.

Is the Samsung 8qfn that much better of a TV than the Samsung q6fn to justify spending the extra $1000 or am I better off saving money and getting the q6fn since the gains in the viewing experience may be negligible to the average consumer like myself?

You can see on the side-by-side comparison the Q8FN handles reflections much better, local dimming performance is much better due to the FALD panel, and HDR brightness is also better on the Q8FN. In the other aspects, the difference in performance of the two TVs is little.
Reflection handling is better on the Q8FN due to the panel being bright enough to overcome glare, but mainly due to the better glossy filter on the Q8FN. If you will be watching in very bright ambiance, then the Q8FN will be better.
If you will be using the TV for a lot of HDR content viewing in a darker room then again the Q8FN will please you more,
Having said that we should note that the difference in performance is not that noticeable to most. So we would recommend the Q6FN for the price difference. At the 55'' we suggest you also consider the Sony X900F, which outperforms the Q6FN with about the same price.

The Q6FN has better native contrast, is a bit brighter and has a wider color gamut. The differences in each of these are very minor, and most people won't notice much of a difference between the two. It really is up to you to decide if the price difference is worth it, especially if you plan on keeping your TV for a long time.

The 49 inch Q6FN model is not out yet. Specs are not yet listed on Samsung's website as of 6/9/2018. Is this an assumption based on last years q6 49 inch model? Otherwise would like to see a source for that info.
This is based on information available on Samsung's Q6FN support page. Under the Product Info header, if you click on "SEE MORE SPECS", under Video and then Motion Rate, there is a note that the 49" has a motion rate of 120, which corresponds to a 60 Hz panel.

Hello. I get a lot of information from your reviews, so thanks!
Unfortunately, despite many searches there is no information about the issue connecting with a PS4. 2016, 2017 Samsung models(like the KS8000, Q6F, Q7F) have been reported, that connecting with a PS4 or PS4 Pro, the screen flickers.

New 2018 TVs from Samsung are great, but I am afraid that the QLEDs or NU8000 have the same flickering issue.
Do you have any advice?

We haven't experienced this specific issue, and we haven't had any reports of this occurring on the 2018 Samsung TVs. We've seen the reports of people having this issue on older Samsung TVs including the KS8000, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a confirmed fix. Some people have had some luck with higher quality cables; it is especially important that the cables are HDCP 2.2 certified as this appears to be an HDMI handshake issue.

Across all of Samsungs 2018 edge lit lineup, this is the only model to show a increase in contrast ratio with local dimming. Is that an error in measurements or is the local dimming some how superior on the Q6 vs NU8000 or Q7?

It isn't an error, but the 3 are all in the same ballpark. The difference is down to the accuracy of the tools used to measure black levels and since the 3 TVs can't be calibrated to the exact same levels there is always some margin in the results.

The Samsung Q6FN is a better TV for all usages except for TV shows and sports. The Q6FN is brighter and has better contrast and black uniformity, but the Q7F handles reflections better and has faster response time. Unless you plan on watching exclusively sports and TV shows, we recommend going with the Q6FN.

When comparing the Q6FN to the Sony X900F you pointed out how the 900F is flicker free. What does flicker do to the image and why is less of it a good thing? It appears that a lot of LEDs use flicker when the game motion plus feature is on?

I have heard flicker can cause headaches and eye strain. Is this true, and what are the pros and cons of flicker?

Our Image Flicker article explains it best, but in general, TVs flicker the backlight to help motion appear more smooth, but it does bother some people as it can be noticeable, especially with lower flicker frequencies. Some people do experience headaches and eye strain due to backlight flicker. The best TVs have no flicker (or flicker above 300 Hz) during normal viewing.

Thank you for the answer, which is better for games Samsung 55 Q8F (2017) or 49 Q6FN (2018) there is no difference in price?
We only test US models, so we don't know what differences exist with international variants but we do expect it to perform similarly to the Q8C (2017) which is curved. The Q6FN is an overall better performer (better contrast, peak brightness, variable refresh rates). Input lag isn't a problem for either TVs. However, you would get better value going with Samsung NU8000 55" which offer similar performance as the 49" Q6FN for less money.

Thank you for the reviews! This site is my #1 go-to when considering a purchase. I currently own the Samsung JS9000 and I am looking to upgrade with gaming in mind at 80% of my use. In reviewing your input lag 2018 listing, it seems that this set outperforms all the other Qled Samsungs across all formats however the Q7 and Q8 received a higher score overall for gaming? While I really wanted to get a FALD set this go around, it seems that this set better suits my needs at 1k less the cost. Thanks!
While input lag performance is an important ingredient for choosing a good TV for gamers, a few mili seconds difference may not be noticeable in a real-world application. If money is an issue, you may want to have a look at the Vizio P Series 2018 which offers full array local dimming and overall similar performance for a lot less money. With the money saved you could go with a bigger screen for a more immersive experience.
